What is VoLTE and what are it’s features?
Since Reliance Jio’s success in providing free calls and internet, everyone was speculating as to how they are doing it. The answer is the VoLTE technology. Let’s take a look at what VoLTE is and what are its features.
What is VoLTE?
VoLTE’s full form is Voice Over Long Term Evolution. VoLTE is the software that enables your phone’s dialer to make calls via internet. It simply means that your voice is converted to small packets of data and is re-converted to voice before it reaches the receiver.
Lets consider the example of Whatsapp. Internet calling through whatsapp requires an application(in this case whatsapp) and internet. Your voice is converted to packets of data and then transmitted.
Well, lets break it down
- Whatsapp is an application which is used to send only messages using the internet.
- An update of whatsapp arrives.
- The update brings a new feature. The feature that allows you to make calls to other person on Whatsapp.
Our Phone’s Dialer works the same way
- Our phone’s default dialer isn’t capable of making calls over the internet. It can only make calls without internet.
- You get a firmware update featuring VoLTE.
- VoLTE now enables your phone’s dialer to make calls through the internet.
Features of VoLTE(Voice Over Long Term Evolution)
Simultaneous Voice and Data Calls: With VoLTE,gone are the days when you needed to disconnect an ongoing call to surf the net. You can surf the internet and talk to a friend with VoLTE.
Improved Voice Quality: Volte enables High Definition(HD) Voice calling. Well, it is debatable whether the quality is HD or not, however the quality is certainly improved compared to 2G,3G etc.
Note: HD calls can be only made from a device supporting VoLTE on a 4G LTE network. The other person also needs to fulfill all these conditions.
No Increase in Voice Charges: Making HD calls through your device won’t increase your data consumption. The networks are smart enough to analyse voice packets thereby not increasing your data usage.
Better Battery Life: While using only 4G without VoLTE, whenever you make/receive calls, your phone switches to 2g, 3g networks. And once you are done with the call then the phone again switches to 4G networks. This to and fro switching of networks drains your battery a lot. However, with Volte since no switching is requiring, you can have a better battery life for your phone.
Currently, the mobile phone makers are making sure that their devices are compatible with 4G Volte. The trend hopes to grow for smartphones.
wow it's very important
